How the estimate works

The calculator starts from the fee range speakers at your experience level commonly quote for a corporate keynote to a mid-size room. Each answer then adjusts that range: association and academic events usually pay less than corporate events, workshops pay more than a single talk, and custom content, travel, and commercial recording rights add to the price. The factor list under your result shows each adjustment, so you can see exactly why the number moved.

Why a fee floor matters more than a fee

Your quote is where a conversation starts. Your fee floor is the least you will accept once you count cash plus the value of travel, a recording you can use, and the people in the room. Deciding it ahead of time keeps you from agreeing to underpriced work when an organizer asks for an answer on the spot. If you enter the hours an engagement takes and what an hour of your time is worth, the calculator uses that time cost as your floor.

Treat every number as a starting point

There is no standard rate card for speaking, and two speakers on the same topic can quote very different fees. Use this estimate to anchor your first quote, then keep a log of what organizers actually pay. After ten or twenty conversations your own data beats any published range. Our guide on how much to charge for speaking has negotiation scripts for each situation.

FAQ

Questions, answered

How much do speakers charge?

It varies widely. New speakers often receive an honorarium in the hundreds of dollars or speak for free registration, speakers with a track record commonly quote a few thousand dollars for a keynote, established experts often quote five to ten thousand, and recognized authorities with books or media profiles charge more. Event type, format, audience size, travel, and customization all move the number.

Should I charge for a breakout session?

Many association and academic conferences offer breakout speakers free registration and sometimes travel, and pay only keynotes. Corporate events are more likely to pay for breakouts. Decide in advance which unpaid sessions are worth it to you, for example when your buyers are in the room or you get a professional recording you can use.

Is travel included in a speaking fee?

Usually no. Most speakers quote a fee plus travel expenses, or a fee plus a flat travel amount. The calculator raises the fee for engagements that need a flight because of the days you spend away, and assumes the organizer covers airfare and hotel on top.

What is a fee floor?

The minimum total value you will accept for an engagement, counting cash and the realistic value of non-cash benefits. With a floor set, every opportunity sorts into worth it, negotiate, or skip, which makes decisions faster and protects your calendar.

Is this calculator free?

Yes, and it runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to our servers unless you choose to create a Worth the Pitch account.
